Hey Bits and Bytes fans!

There are LOTS of Facebook viruses going around right now. Here’s a good link to read up on them and find out how to protect yourself:

Need to Convert a File?

Here’s a quick tip for any of you who need to convert from one file type to another. There’s a free site called Zamzar that you can find at http://zamzar.com/.  Zamzar is a free site for up to a 100MB file. You can convert music files, videos, documents, eBooks, compressed files, etc. It’s very easy to use! If you need bigger files or want an ad-free experience, they have a paid account, but the free account should be enough for most people.  Next time you have a .jpg file and you need a .gif, or if you have an .mp3 file and you need a .wma, just pop over to Zamzar and try it out!

Windows Vista Defrag

I have seen several computers lately that have Windows Vista installed on them and the automatically scheduled disk defragmenting for some reason was not running as scheduled. They had a schedule set, but under the “Next Run” it said “Never” and it also had not defragged in quite some time. If you have a Vista machine and it is running sluggishly, you might want to take a peak at your settings and make sure everything is ok.
To check your settings:
  1. Click on the Start orb in the bottom left
  2. Click all programs
  3. Click “Accessories”
  4. Click “System Tools”
  5. Click “Disk Defragmenter”

Check your settings here

Make sure the “Next scheduled run” doesn’t say “Never”.  It should have a date and time that is in the future.  If it doesn’t, then delete the current schedule and recreate a new one!

New PC-ER Site!

We are currently working on a new PC-ER site.  We are completely relaunching PC-ER as an online help center for computers. The two biggest parts of that site are going to be the forums and this blog.

For those of you who are used to the Bits and Bytes radio show and podcast, we are redesigning this to be a place to post information about the care and maintenance of computers and other technology. We will not be doing a regular podcast, but we will be posting helpful tips, how-tos, and even videos to help make your computing experience more enjoyable, and hopefully we will have a little fun as well!

Check back here often as things are going to be rapidly progressing as we change things around!
